7 Top Tips From the Business Woman of the Bible, Lydia, for Today's Woman of God

Lydia was one of the most successful business women in the Bible. You will find her story in the Bible in Acts 16: 14-15. According to Biblical records, Lydia was a business woman who dyed and sold purple cloth, a material used by the wealthy and elite of the day. This meant Lydia worked in a high-priced market with a high-end target market.

But Lydia was more than just a woman who sold luxury goods to the elite and the powerful. From all accounts it appears she was also the head of her household, an employer of others, and a woman of great Christian faith. She was the first European convert to Christianity and the first to establish a church in her home for other Christians. Fellowship times included examples of how to do business and worship as a part of a business woman's day.

As a powerful woman of God, Lydia has much to offer today's Christian business women. Here are seven valuable lessons for women of God from the Bible woman, Lydia.

1. Keep prayer in your daily activities. The bible story of Lydia says she met the Apostle Paul at a place of prayer. She also opened her home to have worship services for others. Keep your implications in order as a woman of God. Remember to pray unceasingly about everything including your business activities by making prayer a priority activity on your daily schedule.

2. Work to please the Lord. Lydia took her responsibility as a Christian business woman to work "as unto the Lord" very seriously. You can show Christian beliefs through your nature and personality without being pushy or unprofessional. Show Biblical principles through your actions and decisions in your business.

3. Design a powerful company. Lydia was a no-nonsense business woman who built a major company in a wealthy market. Nothing says a woman of God has to play small in the business world. Christian business women should be open to working in all types of industries and not shy away from the potential of going big. If you are pursuing big dreams use Lydia as your role model for growth.

4. Try non-traditional opportunities. By being a successful and wealthy merchant of purple cloth Lydia was in a non-traditional business category during her times. Don't shy away from embracing non-traditional business opportunities. Consider working in fields where few if any woman are already excelling and create new paths to success.

5. Find your balance between work and home. Lydia maintained her household even while running a powerful business. Each woman has to find the way to balance, keeping her home in order while running a business. It might mean downsizing or hiring help. Use your business skills to figure out what works for you to get it all done.

6. Learn to grow your business. Lydia's business was so successful that she had to hire employees. Growing a business means eventually needing to hire help. That help might come in the form of a part time assistants, independent contractors, freelancers or full-time employees. Start in the initial business planning stages to consider how and when you will start to hire help so you can expand your business operations. This creates jobs for others, increases the economy of your area and increases your status and influence as a business professional.

7. Know you can be prosperous. Lydia shows that successful Christian women can be highly prosperous. There's no reason to fear money or to shy away from earning large amounts of money in business. The important key is to keep a check on your heart so money does not become your focus instead of God. Lydia was a business woman in the Bible who prospered while giving all glory to God.

Managing Payroll for Small Business

Payroll may be too cumbersome for businesses to do by themselves, not just because of the number of employees but because it is a process that starts with hiring and does not end until the business dissolves. Also, this is something that needs to be done regularly – mostly monthly although yearly tasks also remain. This includes big as well as small and medium businesses. For large-scale ones, the problem may include tracking the employees as well as filling forms and complying with tax provisions. Small organizations may, on the other hand, find it expensive and therefore budget draining to manage by themselves as well as their inability to employ professional hire. It is no surprise when studies find that payroll, along with tax make up the top options that are outsourced.

With all the accounting for the employees, with all the forms – like Employment Eligibility Verification, Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return, Additional Medicare Tax, Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRA, Insurance Contracts – to be filled, With all the deductions to be made and submitted to the government authority, businesses may find that this process is consuming their time and resource. The course to ease this can be found by choosing among one of the two alternatives: outsource it or make use of applications. It is up to the discretion of the management on the choice to be made.

If outsourced, the business can rest assured regarding the accuracy of data. There is assurance that forms will be filled in time, errors relating to this issue will not arise. This is so because the outsourcing company employs professionals who make sure everything is up to the task. The economy of scale is something that cannot be achieved by most of the organizations. Like the other option, this also means the business does not have to bother about anything related to payroll. The difference being this option means the business may have a sense of loss of authority when opting for this method.

But with the help of payroll software, one can do the task by oneself. The software may come as standalone whereby they specialize in this function only. Or, this function may come bundled together in accounting applications. This method has the advantage of being easy to use, and even with someone not an expert in this topic, this can be managed adequately. Only a basic knowledge about us of the application does the job.

With times, the applications have come with the option whereby businesses can manage their payroll from anywhere, cloud computing facilitating the process which means that the business can access and modify data from anywhere. In addition to giving the management (or other personnel as the need be) the control of data given by apps, what is also possible is the advantage of the simplicity that apps bring forth. Recently, users seem to switch to this latter mode for managing payroll.

Tough Love for an Obese Child

Q: How do you convey to a child that you are not serving the food he wants right now because it is not healthy (ideally without becoming the meany he would think I was)? In this example, he wanted waffles (with lots of syrup) or pancakes or donuts. The child is already extremely obese. He is sensitive to his weight, so I sure wouldn't want to point out the connection about eating this and becoming even fatter, also to not make him feel bad about himself. I know when I want some dessert (that's what I call waffles and donuts), I wouldn't stop or even care now because of some consequences later. How do I get him to eat healthy without ruining our relationship or his self-esteem?

A: You're not going to like me for this answer. I'm just going to quote your question, changing just a couple of words:

How do you convey to a child that you are not giving him the heroin he wants right now because it is not healthy (ideally without becoming the meany he would think I was)? The child is already extremely strung-out. He is sensitive to his sweating, nausea, dry mouth, vomiting and itching , so I sure wouldn't want to point out the connection about taking heroin and becoming even more uncomfortable , also to not make him feel bad about himself. I know when I want some drugs I wouldn't stop or even care now because of some consequences later. How do I get him to stop injecting heroin without ruining our relationship or his self-esteem?

After coming up with that horrible analogy, I have to defend it. Obviously, waffles and donuts are not the same as heroin in every respect. They're legal, for example, so you can get them inexpensively without risking imprisonment. What about addictive? A toxic diet comprised largely of sugar and fat and white flour is at least as addictive as refined drugs. After all, with drugs you can quit. You can't quit eating. You can shift the nature and quality of what you eat, but with toxic food universally celebrated and available everywhere we turn, the recovering food addict's life is a neverending struggle.

You write that your child is sensitive about his weight. Can you see a spiral in which his food addictions are fueled by bad feelings about his weight, leading to a vicious cycle? If the other children in his life aren't already making him feel bad about being fat, they will soon. Choices bring consequences, and it's not within your power to prevent those consequences for him. You can mask some of them, perhaps delay others, but results suppressed have a way of emerging with a vengeance.

Let me ask you a few practical questions:

  • What are the limits of your power?
  • How much control do you have over your child's total environment? Is your partner with you, neutral, or against you?
  • How old is your child?
  • Is his toxic food addiction simply the result of habit, or are there underlying emotional issues he needs to address and resolve that are unrelated to food and weight?

This answer isn't so much about giving you advice on what to do; There's plenty of that in the rest of this blog, and in my upcoming book, Eating to Beat the Odds (write me if you'd like to look at a reviewer's copy, available in about two months). Rather, I want to reframe your hesitation to act. How motivated are you to making a difference in this child's life? The long-term consequences of heroin addiction are well known: collapsed veins, liver disease, weak immune system, respiratory failure, breathing difficulties, pneumonia, bacterial infections, infections of heart lining and valves, arthritis and other rheumatologic problems, risk of hepatitis C and HIV / AIDS from sharing needles. The long-term consequences of a toxic diet are also well-known: cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, MS, macular degeneration, IBS, gout, Alzheimer's, arthritis, weaker immune system, bacterial and viral infections, liver disease, and many more.

Not so different…

You are limited by your motivation to act and your control over the situation. Somewhere, at the intersection of those two lines, you can act. Do it with love, only love. Not judgment. Only compassion; not disgust. Only in joy; not in constriction. Can you give the gift of responsibility without the baggage of blame? It's a fine line, and requires total clarity about your motives and your goals.

Practical Considerations

  • Get the toxic food out of the house. As long as you're in charge of shopping, you can simply eliminate 90% of all temptation by clearing out your fridge and pantry.
  • Don't force him to eat anything. Put out a selection of healthy foods, but don't insist on consumption. When he's hungry, he'll eat. He won't starve himself.
  • Engage him to design his own healthy menu. Go through cookbooks with him and see what appeals to him. Take him shopping. Make cooking together a fun activity.
  • Gradualize him from unhealthy to healthy versions of the same dishes. Examples:
    • whole grain waffles
    • artificial syrup to sauteed fruit topping
    • 100% white rice to 90% white / 10% brown, all the way to 100% brown rice
  • Check out the recipes section at http://www.FitFam.com for some kid-friendly foods

Good luck!

Gestalt: Law of Common Fate

The law of common fate is one of four visual perception laws as theorized by gestalt psychologists. Paul Martin Lester, the author of Visual Communication, an expert in the field wrote: "The fourth law of Gestalt psychology is the law of common fate. A viewer mentally groups five arrows or five raised hands pointing to the sky because they all point in the same direction. An arrow or a hand pointed in opposite direction will create tension, because the viewer will not see it as part of the upwardly directed whole. "

Gestalt's law of common fate is a pretty simple concept. It is basically referring to visual directional lines within a design or layout. In a photograph, if two or more people are moving in the same direction, they have created a directional line known as the law of common fate. Together, they have a common fate or destiny. Another example of the law of common fate could include similar shapes aimed in the same direction. You might wonder why the law of common fate is of importance to artists. First of all, when two objects (whether it be shapes or organic forms) are pointed in the same direction in a layout, the directional lines become dominant in a design. So, if two or more powerful shapes are aimed at or moving in a certain direction, an artist knows to put the message at the point of destination.

Directional lines push our eyes around a page. This can be a problem every bit as much as bonus. For instance, visual collisions frustrate the viewing audience. It can cause too much tension and cause anxiety for the reader which in turn, makes the layout uninviting and too intense.

If a candid photograph of a moving car is heading to the right, the law of common fate dictates that the directional line is pointing to the right. Then again, if a candid photograph of a car is aimed towards the left and the image is part of a design, the directional line is now aimed towards the left. Therefore, if a car is headed towards the right (on an image), the image of the car should be placed towards the left-hand side of a layout, because our eyes read from left to right. This is why the law of common fate is so important. The law of common fate should not be ignored in graphic designs and advertisements. Understanding the law of common fate and how directional lines work on layouts can make all the difference in how information is read and understood.

You Can't Plant Apple Seeds and Expect Oranges

Cheri decided that she wanted to grow an apple tree in her back yard. She had never planted an apple tree before. In fact, she had never planted anything before. This was her first time trying her hand at gardening. But last year, she had this idea that it would be nice to grow an apple tree right in her back yard.

Now that the weather was growing nicer, the idea came back to her and it seemed that she became obsessed with growing an apple tree. Being urged to get started, she found herself going to the library and the book store and on the Internet to research all that she could about growing an apple tree. She had to learn about apple variety and rootstock; about
site selection, proper planting, training and pruning, adequate
fertility, and pest control all of types of things that contributed to creating a healthy and productive tree.

Every time she went out in her yard, she would picture exactly where she would grow the tree. She would see, in her minds eye, the tree already grown with rich and wonderful apples all over it.

The time came for her to plant her tree. She used all the skills she had learned to make sure that it would grow to its fullest potential.

And guess what?

The tree grew and the most wonderfully, red apples sprouted all over the place. Cheri was so proud of her masterpiece.

Planting flowers and trees can really be amazing. You take a little seed and it put it in the dirt and you nurture it and before you know it, it starts to sprout, and then it grows into a full, blown flower, plant or tree.

It's really incredible to experience.

Have you ever planted a tree or a plant? Have you ever seen it sprout and grow all over the place – sometimes growing out of control? Have you ever witnessed that?

I'm sure you have.

In fact, I'm willing to bet on it.

Well, you might not have actually planted a flower or a tree, but each day, you plant thoughts and ideas into your subconscious mind that start to grow. Some of these thoughts and ideas grow out of control and before we know it, they start to take over our lives.

Some of these "seeds" are planted without us ever being aware of it. They are things that we've heard others say about ourselves and we allowed them to get planted, deep into our subconscious mind and then they start to grow so wildly and out of control that we don't even realize it but before long, they have taken over our life.

Let me give you an example. Ever heard your parents say to you, "Money doesn't grow on trees." Or "money is hard to come by." Or "You can't get everything that you want."

Well, these are seeds that are planted into our subconscious mind and over the years, they are nurtured and allowed to grow so much that they begin to grow out of control. We wonder how come we are always struggling to make ends meet or why we can't experience financial freedom like we see so many other people experience.

It's because of those seeds that are planted into our subconscious mind, have been planted so deeply that, without us even given any thought to it, we always find ourselves struggling to make ends meet because money doesn't grow on trees and it's hard to come by and we simply can't get
everything that we want.

We have just accepted it as a truth, a reality, without ever questioning or researching to see if it holds any merit. It becomes second nature for us to quickly say to our own children, "Money don't grow on trees, you know." Because its something that we've heard for most of our life.

And because we have this believe, money will always elude us because our "seed" that has been planted inside of us, has grown so big that it makes sure that we hold on to this belief.

If you plant a seed for an apple tree, an apple tree will grow.

If you plant a seed that money is hard to come by, then money will always be hard to come by.

You can't plant apple seeds and expect oranges to grow.

You can't hold on to beliefs that are planted into your subconscious mind and expect your life to be different from your beliefs.

Sorry, it just doesn't work that way.

If you want to grow oranges, you have to plant seeds that produce oranges.

If you want to live a happy and successful life, you have to plant seeds that will bring about a happy and successful life.

Well, how do you go about doing that when the seeds that have been planted for so long are negative and do not allow you to have the things that you desire?

You do it the same way a Gardener does. When a Gardener plants grass and notices that weeds have sprouted amongst the good grass, s / he goes to work to kill the weeds. They have to destroy the weeds or else it will destroy the good grass.

You must do the same. Destroy the weeds (negative thoughts) that are growing inside of you before they kill off the good grass (positive thoughts).

Always be mindful of what you are thinking and the affect that it will have on your life. When you notice a negative thought – kill it, before it kills you.

ACTION POINT: Let's do some spring cleaning this week. Let's become aware of thoughts that we have that are like weeds and can destroy our efforts to change our life. Let's pull out the weed wacker and the weed killer and destroy them whenever they rear their ugly heads. This week, we will only have positive, life empowering thoughts that move us closer to our goals. And we will destroy negative thoughts that hold us back. Can you do that for yourself this week? I know you can. Don't try to do
it – do it.

Classical Conditioning: The Secret Behind Exercise Motivation

We all know how hard it can be sometimes to get off the couch and exercise.

Even the least creative of minds can come up with some excuse to avoid going for a run. Procrastination is a huge issue in fitness. But many people don't realize how easy it can be to motivate yourself to go for a run.

What if you could trick your mind into thinking it actually wanted to exercise?

Using simple psychology, you can turn your mind into your very own personal trainer! For free.

Your mind used to be your biggest barrier to exercise – your body craved a run, but you talked yourself out of it. Now your mind can be your biggest motivator. How?

Classical conditioning.

Step one is to make a plan. Before you can even start to use psychological conditioning, you need to create a tangible workout schedule. Start with small, attainable goals – such as going for a run every other evening for a week.

You need to write your plan out as a list – and put it somewhere you'll see every day. This constant reminder that you should be exercising is important to the concept of classical conditioning which we will try to implement into your exercise routine.

Next it's time to apply the psychological phenomenon of classical conditioning.

Classical conditioning is a term given to the psychological effect of stimulus association. Perhaps you've heard of Pavlov's dogs – who came to associate food with the sound of a bell, and eventually salivated merely at the bell. Classical conditioning requires a neutral stimulus to gradually become closely associated with a stimulus which causes some sort of reflex in the subject. Eventually the boundary between the stimuli will become blurred in the mind. The ultimate goal of classical conditioning is to transfer the reflex from the second stimulus to the first (previously neutral) stimulus.

So what's the neutral stimulus in your exercise plan?

The act of going for a run.

In order to achieve effective motivation through classical conditioning, you need to find a stimulus – which already causes a reaction from you – and begin associating it with the act of exercise.

For example: your favorite song. Go cold turkey on listening to your favorite song – unless you are exercising. Make sure that you do not hear the song at any other time. Look forward to listening to it while you run!

After a while, the same feelings you get NOW when you hear your favorite song will be associated with the act of exercise.

To run will be a treat – whether or not you listen to the song.

Although the stimulus of music is ideal for this sort of conditioning – because it is easy to control, and easy to associate with physical activity – you CAN experiment with other types of stimuli as well!

Maybe you have a favorite shirt that would be appropriate to run in. Maybe you can drink your favorite energy drink on your run.

Keep in mind that stimuli which are associated with physical activity WHILE you are completing the activity are the most effective. The more intense the connection with the actual activity, the more effective the classical conditioning will be. And, ultimately, the more you will love exercising!

Finally, realize that lack of motivation to exercise is something that everyone experiences.

But now you're one of the few who know the secret to overcoming exercise procrastination.

And you can beat this laziness!

Now get out there and go for a run!

1.Client-side scripting – the code that executes in a web browser and determines what your customers will see once they land on your site;

2.Server-side scripting – the code that executes on a web server and supplies the behind-the-scene mechanics of the way a website works;

3.Database technology- helps a website continue to run smoothly.

Usually, the job of a web developer is to build a website from scratch, making use of skills in any of these three areas.

As a matter of fact, large-scale projects usually distribute these tasks among several web developers: one developer sets up the back end of a website, whereas the other looks after the client side to provide the website with style and functionality.

Building a website from scratch gives the advantage of creating something unique and original that is suitable for your specific needs.

The Difference between a Web Developer and Web Designer

In general, the focus of a web designer is on the way a website looks and feels; a web developer’s focus in on the technical aspect of the site. A developer who does programming for a client will also have an impact on a site’s look, feel and layout. For this reason, both web developers and web designers are familiar with CSS, HTML and JavaScript.

However, for larger-scale projects, the difference is usually much more defined.

Web designers use graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator in creating graphics, layout and logos that determine how a website looks and feels.

Web developers still have to know more about the aesthetics and art direction of web designers – in case they handle client-side scripts – but they will usually focus more on the features and functionality, such as the shopping cart on an online store.

Overall, both skill sets are important in building a proper website and usually, there is no need for a designer to write the code. If this is the case, a graphic designer will make it a reality.
